Under the Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) program, undergraduate students from IITK and other participating institutions undertake short duration, but focused research projects and push their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by the classroom. The duration of the programme is 10 weeks starting from May 7, 2012 to July 16, 2012. Students working at IITK receive a stipend. An award plus a commendation certificate is given to those SURGE students who produce exceptional quality research during the period.

Since 2006, 389 Grants were offered from university across the country and from participating overseas institutions as part of the SURGE program.

The SURGE program of Summer 2012 has three different components:

SURGE Overseas program for IITK students: In this program, IITK students are given a unique opportunity to spend 10 weeks of the summer at one of four prestigious universities. The Universities for SURGE 2012 are Ecole Polytechnique (http://www.polytechnique.edu), Ecole Centrale de Paris (http://www.ecp.fr) University of Melbourne (http:// www.eng.unimelb.edu.au) and Rice University (http://www.rice.edu).

Interested students need to complete the online application form. In addition, two letters of recommendation have to be provided as hard copy to the SURGE Office. The deadline for submission and receipt of recommendation letters has been extended. The last date is January 23rd. Applicants are requested to follow the instructions given in the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM, Recommendation Form.

SURGE program for IITK students at IIT Kanpur: In this program, IITK students are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. In order to complete the application, it is necessary for the student to identify a professor who agrees to be his/her mentor during the summer period, and a suitable project to pursue for the 10 weeks in summer.

Interested students need to complete the online application form. In addition, one letter of recommendation and one mentor certification form have to be submitted as hard copy to the SURGE office. The deadline for submission and receipt of recommendation letters has been extended. The last date is January 23rd. Applicants are requested to follow the instructions given in the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM, Certificate from Mentor, Recommendation Form.

SURGE program for Non IITK students at IIT Kanpur: Under this program, students from a list of colleges in India will be eligible to apply for summer project at IIT Kanpur. The list of colleges is given in the link HERE. If your college is on this list, you will be eligible to apply for the SURGE program. You only have to fill an ONLINE APPLICATION FORM, the deadline for submission has been extended, the last date is January 23rd. MTech students in their first year may also apply.
