SURGE at IIT Kanpur
 

Under the Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) program, undergraduate students from IITK and other participating institutions undertake short duration, but focused research projects and push their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by the classroom. The duration of the programme is 10 weeks starting from 13 May, 2013 to 14 July, 2013. Students working at IITK receive a stipend. An award plus a commendation certificate is given to those SURGE students who produce exceptional quality research during the period.

Since 2006, 389 Grants were offered from university across the country and from participating overseas institutions as part of the SURGE program.

The SURGE program of Summer 2013 has three different components:

SURGE Overseas program for IITK students: In this program, IITK students are given a unique opportunity to spend 10 weeks of the summer at one of two prestigious universities. The Universities for SURGE 2013 are Ecole Centrale de Paris (http://www.ecp.fr) and University of Melbourne (http:// www.eng.unimelb.edu.au),Melbourne School of Engineering,(http://www.eng.unimelb.edu.au )

Interested students need to complete the online application form. In addition, two letters of recommendation have to be provided as hard copy to the SURGE Office. The deadline for submission and receipt of recommendation letters is January 15th, 2013 till 5 PM. Applicants are requested to follow the instructions given in the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM, Recommendation Form.

SURGE program for IITK students at IIT Kanpur: In this program, IITK students are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. In order to complete the application, it is necessary for the student to identify a professor who agrees to be his/her mentor during the summer period, and a suitable project to pursue for the 10 weeks in summer.

Interested students need to complete the online application form. In addition, one letter of recommendation and one mentor certification form have to be submitted as hard copy to the SURGE office. The deadline for submission and receipt of recommendation letters is January 15th, 2013 till 5 PM. Applicants are requested to follow the instructions given in the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM, Certificate from Mentor and Recommendation Form.

IITK students from below are eligible to apply (Preference will be given to 3rd year students)
B.Tech (2nd, 3rd year),
B.Tech-M.Tech Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd ),
M.Sc. (Integrated) 2nd, 3rd year
M.Sc. (2yr) 1st year

SURGE program for Non IITK students at IIT Kanpur: SURGE program for Non-IITK students at IIT Kanpur. Under this program, Non-IITK students will be eligible to apply for summer project at IIT Kanpur. This year SURGE is open for all colleges.

The eligibility criteria for Non-IITK students is mentioned below:
B.Tech/BE (3rd year completed),
B.Tech-M.Tech Dual Degree (3rd completed, 4th year completed)
M.Sc. Integrated (3rd completed, 4th year completed)
BSc./BA (3rd year completed)
M.Sc./MA (1st year completed)
M.Tech (1st year completed)
M.Des (1st year completed)

NOTE: The Students who meet the above criteria at the time of joining may apply.
