Swimming Pool is an Institute Community Facility operating under the Physical Education Section through a Management Committee appointed by the Director.The expenses incurred in day to day maintenance and running of the swimming pool will be the met out of the income generated through membershipfees. A subsidy of an amount approved by the Deputy Director will be given from the Institute games and sports budget.The Staff of the swimming pool will be directly under the control of the In-Charge, Physical Education Section.

Swimming Pool Management Committee:

Duties and Responsibilities of Swimming Pool Management Committee:

  • To prepare the budget and lay down the policy guidelines for smooth running of the pool.
  • To decide about membership fees for different categories of users and charges for the guests of the members.
  • To decide about the dates of opening and closing of a swimming season.
  • To decide about pool timings and slots for swimming pool usage.
  • To formulate/revise conduct rules and guidelines for smooth running of the swimming pool.
  • To formulate qualifications for lifeguards and to constitute selection committee for hiring them.
  • To provide kit for life-guards.
  • To decide about any other matter which it deems necessary for the smooth running of the swimming pool.
    Conduct Rules:

  • Pool timings and slot given must be strictly adhered to by all members and guests.
  • Members will be allowed to enter the pool only after they have signed the register and handed over the membership cards at the counter.
  • At the end of their slot members are required to sign the register again and collect back their membership cards.
  • Membership of those members whose cards are left over will be suspended for at least one week.
  • Children in the age group of 4 to 12 years of age must be accompanied in the pool by one of the escorts listed in the application form.
  • Children below 4 years of age are not allowed in the swimming pool.
  • Proper swimming trunks/costumes must be used during swimming. Ladies and other members having long hair must use bathing caps during swimming.
  • Members must have a shower followed by a footbath at the door of the shower room before entering the pool.
  • Use of oil before entering the swimming pool is strictly prohibited.
  • Use of soap etc. in the swimming pool is strictly prohibited.
  • Playing, jumping and quarreling in the swimming pool is strictly prohibited.
  • Instructions of the lifeguards on duty will be the final word at the pool. Membership of those not obeying instructions of lifeguards on duty will be cancelled.
  • Under swimmers slot members should swim lengthwise to avoid any collision or disturbance to other swimmers.
  • Smoking, drinking and consumption of eatables are strictly forbidden in the swimming pool premises.
  • No photography is allowed in the swimming pool premises unless proper permission has been obtained from the Chairman, Swimming Pool Management Committee.
  • Animals are not permitted in the swimming pool premises.

Guidelines:

  • Swimming pool timings will be between 5:30 A.M. and 9:30 A.M. in the morning and between 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. in the evenings.
  • Each slot will be of 45 minutes duration with a 15 minutes gap between the slots.
  • In any slot number of swimmers should not exceed 80.
  • Three lifeguards will always be on duty during every slot.
  • Physical Education Section will procure and make available proper life saving equipment at the pool.
  • Diving should be permitted only under proper supervision.
  • Good swimmers and learners should be clearly distinguished and appropriately segregated.
  • While employing temporary life guards they should be tested for following capabilities: (a) ability to help a drowning swimmer, (b) various swimming skills,  (c) provide proper first-aid as and when required, (d) keep their calm in emergency situations, and (e) have adequate communication skills.
  • The selection committee for hiring temporary lifeguards must include experts in appropriate areas.
  • All lifeguards (permanent as well as temporary) should be required to attend a one-week camp before the start of swimming season. Apart from sharpening their swimming and life saving skills, they should be provided appropriate first-aid training during this camp by qualified experts. Physical Education Section may organize such camp at IIT Kanpur swimming pool itself.
  • Swimming Pool membership is open only to the following categories of persons.
    • IIT Kanpur employees/retired employees and their dependent wards.
    • Employees of campus organizations (Post Office, State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Police Outpost, etc.) officially allowed to stay on campus and their dependent wards.
    • Bonafide students of the Institute and their families.
    • Alumini and their families.
    Anyone other than the above mentioned will be treated as outsider and will not be entitled to become member of swimming pool.
  • Before issuing membership pass to a person proper check must be made to verify the authenticity of applicant form official records like Health Centre Booklet, Identity Card etc.
  • To become a member of swimming pool one will have to produce a certificate from a qualified doctor certifying that the applicant is fit for swimming.
  • Members may be allowed to bring one guest for a maximum of two days in a week on payment at a rate prescribed by Swimming Pool Management Committee.
  • Members of the Institute Swimming Team may be allowed to swim in any slot other than the family slot.
  • In the event of loss of the original membership card, a duplicate card will be issued only after paying full membership fees.
  • In the event of power failure or due to any other unforeseen circumstances the pool may be closed or slots may be suspended/cancelled.
  • Swimming pool may be rented for special events like swimming meets, etc. at a rate decided by the Swimming Pool Management Committee.
