Getting into IIT Kanpur is no mean feat in itself, but perhaps, even harder is what follows once you enter this institute. This is testimony to the extremely competitive yet challenging environment prevalent here at IITK, given the rigorous academic curriculum along with a seemingly endless roster of extra curricular activities all through the year, be it cultural, sports, technical, or even related to films and media, and entrepreneurship too.
The admission process to IIT Kanpur includes the following five examinations, each for entry into one of the academic programmes:

IIT-JEE: Joint entrance examination, considered to be the toughest exam in India, sees about 0.4 million students compete each year and only 2% finally make it into an IIT.

B.Tech.-The 8 semester program is offered in eight fields of engineering. It aims at a strong grounding in the respective fields of engineering with strong emphasis on core fundamentals and practical research exposure through a two-semester B.Tech project.

Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech)- is a 10 semester program, at the end of which the students are conferred both the degrees. The students, after their B.Tech course requirements, work towards their M.Tech thesis in specialized engineering research area well guided by their faculty.

M.Sc. (5 year Integrated degree) – The 10 semester programs are offered in Physics, Mathematics & Scientific Computing and Chemistry. It aims at development of basic sciences knowledge, building expertise in respective fields with a strong sense of inquiry and research.

GATE: The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) focuses to identify the best and the brightest students for the Postgraduate Programs in Engineering at IIT's. GATE is held in 22 different Disciplines and some of the disciplines see up to 40000 test-takers every year with only about 300 making it to IIT's.

M.Tech. - The major part of the program comprises of a one and a half year research project flavored with the research assistantship taken by most of the students. Along with this, one or two years of course work develops a sound theoretical base defines its strong foundation.

JAM: The Joint Admission to M.Sc. (JAM), with an average selection rate of 4% to IITs, is held in different disciplines for admission into the various M.Sc. programmes offered by the IITs.

M.Sc. (2 year)-The two year M.Sc. program ropes in the best of the science graduates of the country and nurtures them to provide for excellence in the field of pure and applied sciences.

JMET: Joint Management Entrance Test for admission into the 2 year MBA program.

MBA – The emphasis of MBA at IIT Kanpur to nurture leaders who dare to unlearn and relearn in the dynamic world of business.

CEED: Common Entrance Examination for admission to the Post Graduate Design programme.

M.Des. - Two years Master in Design program nurtures graduate students specialize in Product Design and Visual Communication Courses
- PhD-The Ph.D. program caters to an original research thesis. The average duration of the program is about 5 years.
