The objective of the invention is to transmit power to
ground level by mechanical means from a wind turbine rotor placed on
a tower of height 10 m or more. Transmission by a rigid shaft has
been found unworkable. Hence all over the world the most common
practice is to install gear box and generator at the same height (10
m or more) with the rotor, ie, at the tower top. This creates
problems for installation & maintenance. So the invention
removes the problem of placing gear box and generator at the same
height by using a multiple-strand steel cable, instead of a rigid
shaft, to connect the rotor of wind turbine to machinery at Ground
level. These machinery are speed altering device (gear box or belt
pulley drive) and power generation system. It provided many
advantages over a rigid shaft. It is flexible in nature, takes less
efforts to assemble, has no alignment problem and is not prone to
vibration & fatigue etc. It absorbs shocks arising out of gust
of wind acting on the rotor. This new system showed its usefulness
during assembling of wind turbine system, erection and experiments.
