The Department  of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur was started in 1961. The mandate of the Department is to 
  • conduct teaching courses for students of science and engineering disciplines 
  • conduct research in pure and applied physics; and 
  •  conduct interdisciplinary studies, especially with engineering departments. 
Over the years the Department has evolved into India's premier physics teaching institution and has also made significant contributions to research and the development of science in India.  Our alumni may be found among the faculty members of most  research institutions   in India and many abroad. We have strong theory and experimental groups working in various frontline areas of research.
