Announcement regarding MS Exchange Server

CC is running a mail facility viz MS Exchange Mail Server since May 2006.

The immediate question which flashes in the mind of a person who has been using UNIX based mail services from a long time is regarding virus/worm attacks on a windows based machine.  Please rest assured that we have included all mechanisms to make it as secure as possible. Virus/worm in one user’s mail box cannot corrupt other mail boxes.

Also it is not necessary that you use windows box to access your exchange mails. All your current methods of accessing mails will continue to work. For example if you have been using web based mail like squirrel mail, Exchange provides its own web based mail, popularly known as OWA.

If you have been using Mozilla mail you can still use it with just one change in the settings.

But to really appreciate Exchange Server you need to either use the web interface (preferably on Internet Explorer) or use Microsoft Outlook 2003 (included With Office 2003). Pl note that Outlook Express is NOT the same as MS Outlook. The web interface and MS Outlook interface work at really appreciable speed compared to the current setup.

To get a glimpse of how OWA screen looks like see here:

You can also access your mails from outside IITK via the web interface.

Apart from the nice features like a good web interface, Calendar, Scheduler, Contact Manager etc you will get more quota (200 MB) on the new server. Let me point out that Mobile/PDA synchronization works best with MS outlook 2003!

Your mail box will be backed up on daily basis. You have nothing to loose.

To get your self enrolled to the new facility, just send a mail to gopesh@iitk.ac.in.
