Recommended antivirus products for preventing your PC from Viruses and other internet threats

Computer Centre recommends three options of anti-virus solutions for protecting your pc from viruses.

Important note

Please note that you should install only one antivirus product. Before installing any of these antivirus, remove any anti-virus or spyware installed on your PC and reboot your PC and then continue with the fresh installation of any of the above stated antivirus solutions. Not adhering to this note may crash your PC.

 

Steps to take for prevention from "Ransomware"

  • Disable File and Printer Sharing irrespective of your Windows Version unles it most required. The write-up at http://www.iitk.ac.in/nt/faq/file_printer.htm describes the same. Please note that the file and printer sharing service is responsible for most of the malware spreads.
  • Disable “AutoPlay” feature for removable devices.
  • If your Windows Version is 7 or above, please make sure that Windows is up-to-date. To do so, open Windows Update by typing “Windows Update” in the search box, and check for and apply all updates.

  • If, for any reason, you are unable to use Windows Update or do not wish to use it, please manually apply the patch corresponding to your version of Windows from here: https://goo.gl/bbv0a7
  • For older and unsupported  versions of Windows (variants of Windows XP), please download the corresponding patch from https://goo.gl/BxbkWU

1. Sophos Home :
Sophos Home is a free Anti-Virus solution for Mac and PCs. Sophos Home protects Mac and PCs from malware, viruses, ransomware and inappropriate websites.

To install a copy of Sophos Home Software, simply follow the steps given below:

  • Open the website https://home.sophos.com in browser.
  • Click on "SIGN IN" and then click on "Need to create an account", follow further steps.
  • Download Sophos Antivirus, install and update.
  • Update will happen in only proxy less connection to Internet. For proxy less connection Click Here

2. Microsoft Security Essentials (For Windows 8 user see section 2 below):
Microsoft Security Essential is a free Anti-Virus solution provided by Microsoft. For installation of Microsoft Free Anti-Virus, it is essential that your PC must run a Genuine Windows. For getting a install copy of Microsoft Security Essential Click Here.

MSE uses the Microsoft update server for the virus definition update. For this your PC must have WinHTTP proxy settings that can be set through the files below

  1. For 32 bit Windows 7 and Windows 8 (32/64 bit) User Click Here
  2. For 64 bit Windows 7 User Click Here
  3. For Windows XP User: Set Internet Explorer Proxy to "ironport1.iitk.ac.in" or "nknproxy.iitk.ac.in"
Process of using these files: Download the appropriate file for your Windows version (32 bit or 64 bit) on your desktop. Right click on the file and click on “Run as Administrator”.

Important: Reset your WinHTTP Proxy for using your Laptop outside IIT campus network
Press 3

Press 4 for Exit

Note: These settings are only for Microsoft Windows Products that uses Microsoft Windows update server. You are free to use any proxy settings in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.

 

2. Windows Defender for Windows 8/8.1/10 Users:
Windows 8/8.1/10 has a built in antivirus called Windows Defender which is a newer version of already existing Microsoft Security Essentials with same security level. It is recommended not to install any other antivirus on Windows 8/8.1/10. Just configure defender from control panel for updates. Follow instructions in section 1 above (just set the WinHTTP proxy and leave installation of MSSE)
