Innovative Physics Teaching at School level

A Workshop on “Innovative Physics Teaching at School level” was held at IIT Kanpur from 2-6 June 2005. To break the monotony of blackboard teaching and further enthuse students to learn Physics, the need of shifting towards demonstrations based teaching was increasingly being felt b a concerned section of the teachers and students. Prof. Harish Chandra Verma, a faculty of department of Physics, IIT Kanpur along with his team took up this cause and has developed many low cost experiments covering the whole spectrum of Physics that is taught in schools. The idea of this increasingly popular teaching technique is to give 2-3 minutes demonstration of an experiment that exhibits the physical behaviour that is to be taught in the class.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. S. G. Dhande, Director IIT Kanpur who termed it as a “big step towards making school education more efficient.” Other invitees who participated in the inaugural session speech also said that this workshop is going

A total of 38 participants from different parts of the country attended the workshop. A set of thirty-seven odd experiments for class room demonstrations and eight experiments for extended experimental investigation were presented to the participants by the resource persons. In a subsequent session the participants practiced the demonstrated experiments.
