The International Conference on Mathematical Biology was
inaugurated by Professor Kripa Shanker, Acting Director IITK on February 19,
2004. Welcoming the delegates Professor Peeyush Chandra, Convener, Organizing
Committee, pointed out that Mathematical Biology is an interdisciplinary area
of research and IIT Kanpur has been in forefront to promote the research activities
in this area. About ten foreign delegates participated in the conference including
Professor K.B. Chandran (University of Iowa), Professor Ajit Yoganathan (Georgia
Institute of Technology, Atlanta), Professor Gary Krenz (Marquette University,
USA), Professor Andrea Pugliese (Universita di Trento, Italy), Professor Kholodov
(Moscow Institution of Physics, Russia).

About 130 papers and invited talks were presented on various topics of Bio-informatics, Biomechanics, Ecological and Epidemiological Modeling, Medical Imaging, Biophysics. Professor K.B. Chandran gave a interesting talk on the complications of mechanical heart valve resulting from thrombus disposition. Professor G.Jayaraman (IIT Delhi) and Professor Gary Krenz talked about use of simple mathematics in getting an insight to problems related to pulmonary airways. Professor J.B. Shukla, one of the senior most mathematical biologist of India presented basic mathematical models for the spread of infectious diseases. Professor Sowdhamini (IISc Bangalore) gave a talk on bacterial phosphates.
