It gives us immense pleasure to share that Divanshu Kumar (Ph.D. Student under Prof. Niraj Mohan Chawake), Syed Mohammad Musthaq (Ph.D. Student under Prof. Krishanu Biswas) and Aravind K (Ph.D. Student under Prof. Rajdip Mukherjee), from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering have been selected for the Prime Minister Research Fellowship Award for the year 2023-24. This recognition comes in light of her remarkable recent publication entitled "Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Rare-Earth-Free n-Type Oxide Perovskite Composite with Graphene Analogous 2D MXene", which was published in Small (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/smll.202206710) in 2023.

We are delighted to inform you that Prof. Anish Upadhyaya (MSE, IIT Kanpur) has recently received felicitation from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for his pioneering contributions in the utilization of standards in education. This award was conferred on the occasion of World Standard Day during a ceremony held at New Delhi on October 13, 2023. Prof. Upadhyaya currently serves as the Chairperson of the Powder Metallurgy Sectional Committee within the Metallurgical Division (MTD-25) of BIS. Through this role, he has spearheaded various initiatives, including the formulation of new standards, fostering industrial and academic outreach through courses and workshops, and effectively promoting the utilization of Indian Standards.

Mr. Dhananjay Dubey, a PhD student under Prof. Rajdip Mukherjee (MSE) and Prof. Manjesh Singh (ME) has received the Best Paper Presentation award for his paper entitled "Effect of Cold Rolling on the Tribological behavior of Inconel 718 Superalloy" in the "Space Tribology" category at the "TRIBOINDIA-2023, the International Conference on Tribology" held on 05 - 07 October 2023. We congratulate him and wish him the best for his further research journey at IIT Kanpur.


We are delighted to share that Dr. Shivam Tripathi has recently become a valued member of our department, joining us on September 15, 2023, in the role of Assistant Professor. Dr. Shivam Tripathi boasts an impressive academic background, holding a PhD and a B.Tech in Materials Science and Engineering.
His journey in academia began with a remarkable PhD in Materials Engineering, which he successfully completed at Purdue University in 2021. Prior to this, he earned his B.Tech in Materials Science and Engineering from the prestigious IIT Kanpur in 2016.
Dr. Tripathi's academic journey has been marked by noteworthy achievements. Before his association with IIT Kanpur, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the esteemed Italian Institute of Technology. During this time, he made significant contributions to the field of ammonia catalysis, conducting experiments under operando conditions in the Haber-Bosch process.
In his doctoral research, Dr. Tripathi delved into the fascinating realm of martensitic transformation in shape memory alloys, exploring its tunability through coherent second-phase interactions. Additionally, he conducted groundbreaking research into thermal transport, with a focus on graphene-capped interconnects.
We extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to Dr. Tripathi, and we express our heartfelt wishes for his continued success and contributions to our department.

We are pleased to share that Mr. Devendra Nama (Ph.D. Student, Advisor: Dr. Rahul Sarkar) got first place in oral presentation in the category Innovations in Extractive Metallurgy for the topic entitled "Solid state reduction of hematite ore using hydrogen at moderate temperatures" in the National level Students' Seminar on Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, "Behind the Teacher's Desk (BTTD-2023)", held at CSIR-NML Jamshedpur during June 8-9, 2023. He was also awarded the first prize in Metallurgical Quiz in the same seminar.

We are delighted to inform you that Dr. Shobit Omar's research group has recently published a review article entitled "Recent Progress and Prospects of NASICON Framework Electrodes for Na-ion Batteries" in the prestigious review journal "Progress in Materials Science" (Impact factor of 48.1).
This comprehensive review highlights recent advances in NASICON-structured materials for electrode application in rechargeable sodium-ion batteries.
Mr. Thirupathila Thirupathi, Ms. Vandana Kumari and Mr. Sumanta Chakrabarty are the co-authors of this article.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Raghupathy Yuvaraj has recently joined our department (on Jun 20, 2022) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Raghupathy holds PhD, M. Tech and B.E. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Materials Engineering from IISc Bengaluru (2018). He received his M. Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from IIT Madras (2008), and B. E. in Metallurgical Engineering from Govt. College of Engineering, Salem (Anna University, 2006). Prior to joining IIT Kanpur, he served as an assistant professor in the department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, NIT Warangal. He also has industry research experience from R & D, Tata Steel Ltd (Jamshedpur, 2008-2011), where he explored the feasibility of plasma assisted PVD based coatings for corrosion protection of steel, and zinc recovery from galvanising dross.
In his doctoral research, his explored anti-microbial properties, bio-fouling and corrosion behavior of Ni-Ag nanomaterials for industrial applications.

Prof. C. (Ravi) Ravindran, Director of the Centre for Near-net-shape Processing of Materials (CNPM) and Professor of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes at the Toronto Metropolitan University, visited the department of Materials Science and Engineering on 09 June 2022. Prof. Ravindran interacted with the faculty members and also visited the departmental labs.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Srinu Gangolu has recently joined our department (on May 20, 2022) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Gangolu completed his B.Tech from RVR & JC college in Mechanical Engineering, Guntur. He did his M.Tech in Nanotechnology from National Institute of Technology Calicut, Kerala. He also obtained Ph.D. degree from Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, IIT Bombay in 2014. His research work focuses on high temperature deformation behaviour in crystalline materials.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering successfully organized Research Scholars Day 2022 (RSD22) on 7th May 2022. The event was meticulously planned and conducted by the Research Scholars of the department. RSD is an annual event of the department whose primary objectives are to promote scholarly discussions amongst the research scholars and also to encourage interdisciplinary research in the department. A series of outstanding technical talks were delivered by the senior research scholars of the department. Additionally, metallography contest and quizzes were organized to enthuse the younger researchers. We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Arunabh Meshram has recently joined our department (on Dec. 15, 2021) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Meshram has done B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering from NIT Raipur, Raipur, India (2011-2015). He obtained his Ph.D. (2019) from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, India. His doctoral work was on recycling of white aluminium dross to recover valuable products via hydrometallurgical route. His broad area of interest is in Non-Ferrous Extractive Metallurgy. He has also served as Temporary Faculty in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, NIT Raipur (2019-2021)

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Shikhar Misra has recently joined our department (on Nov. 15, 2021) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Misra received his PhD in Materials Engineering from Purdue University (2016-2020). He received both his bachelors and master's degree (BT-MT dual degree) in Materials Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur (2011-2016). After his Ph.D., he worked at Intel, Hillsboro, USA for one year (2020-2021).
His research is focused on developing new materials design through self-assembled metal-oxide and oxide nanocomposites epitaxial thin films for potential application as metamaterials and multiferroics. During his PhD, his research focused on developing new self-assembled oxide-metal nanocomposite thin film designs for optical metamaterial applications.

Doctor Vivek Verma of MSE department and his team have developed agarose-based dressings for chronic wounds. The dressing helps in reducing microbial onslaught and modulates the physiology at the wound site allowing it to heal. This work was funded by the Department of Science and Technology.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Rahul Sarkar has recently joined our department (on Sep. 02, 2021) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Sarkar has completed his B.E. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India in 2011 and his M.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from IIT Bombay in 2013. Prior to his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah, USA (2015-2019), Dr. Sarkar worked as a researcher in Tata Steel Ltd. in Jamshedpur, India from 2013-2015. For his Ph.D. dissertation, he worked on the interactions of selected refractories with iron and iron oxides under flash iron making conditions. As a part of his Ph.D. work, he was also involved in the large-scale laboratory testing of the flash iron making facility installed in the University of Utah for a period of over 2 years. Post Ph.D., Dr. Sarkar joined the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) in the U.K as a Research Fellow (2019-2021). For his post-doctoral work, he was involved in the development of alternative mould fluxes for casting and innovative grades of steel. His research interests lie broadly in the field of high-temperature chemical processing of materials with special emphases on iron making, steel making and continuous casting. He is also interested in the theory of diffusion and its relation to the structure in solids.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Nilesh Badwe has been appointed as an Associate Editor of the journal "Microelectronics Reliability". The journal is dedicated to disseminating the latest research results and related information on the reliability of microelectronic devices, circuits and systems, from materials, process and manufacturing, to design, testing and operation.


While bioplastics are biodegradable, ecologically responsive and sustainable, they have several drawbacks such as low strength, large capacity for water absorption, moderate control over water vapour transmission rate, air permeability and raw material used (forest reserves and food stock).
Prof. Vivek Verma and his research group at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur are working towards addressing these challenges by using natural agar to produce biodegradable plastics and are working closely with an FMCG group.


Ms. Shruti Dubey, a doctoral scholar in the Department of Material Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur, has been selected as a delegate of President's Council of Student Advisors (PCSA) for the term 2021-22. PCSA is the student-led committee of American Ceramic Society (ACerS) responsible for representing student interests across the globe. The PCSA is the primary face of ACerS to ceramics and materials science students via its subsidiary committees, divisions, sections, and classes. The role of the PCSA delegate is to represent their collegiate institution to PCSA, as well as representing the PCSA and ACerS to their academic department. This recognition of Ms. Shruti as PCSA, the student leadership council within The American Ceramic Society (ACerS), is rare honor to represent the subcontinent. Currently, Ms. Shruti Dubey serves as the Chair, Material Advantage @ IIT Kanpur Chapter.


Ms. Shruti Dubey has been selected as the ASM student board member for a 1-year tenure for the term July 2021 to June 2022. She will be representing not only IIT Kanpur but also will be serving as a national representative for material science student community to provide insights and ideas to the ASM board. ASM International is the world's largest association of materials-centric engineers and scientists. The society is dedicated to informing, educating, and connecting the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world. Being selected as ASM student board member is a great achievement by her on a global platform. With profound grief, we inform you that Prof. Satish Chandra Koria, former Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, passed away on 09 May 2021 at around 4 pm in Indore at the age of 75. He was suffering from age-related ailment. He is survived by his two daughters and a son.

He joined the then Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT Kanpur in the year 1984 as an Assistant Professor after spending nearly a decade in Germany. Prior to that, he was a faculty in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, University of Roorkee. He was also the Head of the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at IIT Kanpur from 2000 to 2002. His contribution in the field of Process Metallurgy and Refractory Technology is highly valued in the community. Prof. Koria's NPTEL lectures on Steel Making as well as on Fuels Refractory and Furnaces are very popular. (know more...)

Under the aegis of Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) IIT Kanpur and Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) IIT Kanpur Professor Anish Upadhyaya and Dr. Asit Prakash organized a 6-day online QIP Course on "Theoretical and Practical Perspective on Material Manufacturing Technology" between 08-13 March 2021. The course is aimed at providing the latest advances in the manufacturing processes from materials perspective with structure-properties-processing correlation to the faculty, staff and research scholars of engineering institutes and industry personnel. The course has several in-depth lectures from experts from IIT Kanpur, IIT-BHU, IIT Madras and IIT Hyderabad. This conference is the 7th of the twice-yearly SUNRISE symposia uniting academics, students, and industry professionals from the UK and Global South in the field of solar and other renewable energy technologies designed for sustainable rural development.

We pleased to inform you that Dr. Nilesh Badwe has recently joined our department (on Feb 15, 2021) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Badwe has completed B.Tech. from IIT Bombay in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science in 2008 and Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 2014. His academic research focused on the mechanical properties of nanoporous gold and stress corrosion cracking in noble metal alloys. Later, he worked at Intel Corporation, Hillsboro, OR, USA as a Staff packaging R&D engineer and Technologist till February 2021 where he led the development and implementation of low-temperature solder alloys and thermally stable fatigue-resistant electrodeposited nanocrystalline alloys. click here for more details

With deepest sorrow, we inform you about demise of Prof. M. L. Vaidya, Former Professor and Head of the Department of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering (renamed as Materials Science and Engineering in 2010), on 24th Jan 2021 at Pune. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Prof. Vaidya was born on 18 Dec 1933. He joined IIT Kanpur as Lecturer on 13th March 1962. Prof. Vaidya was inducted as the first faculty member of our department on 17th March 1963. He was Head of the Metallurgical Engineering Department from 1987 to 1990.

He will be missed by his students and colleagues from the Department and Institute. Rest in peace Prof. Vaidya.

With great sadness we inform you that Prof. G. S. Murthy, Former Professor and Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, passed away on 15th Nov 2020 at Morgantown, W. Virginia. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Prof. Murthy was born on 3rd July 1940. He joined IIT Kanpur on 12th July 1967. He was Head of the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department from 1979 to 1984 and Head of ACMS from 1987 to 1992. He took voluntary retirement from the Institute in 1997 after 30 years of illustrious service.

He will be missed by his students and colleagues from the Department and Institute. Rest in peace Prof. Murthy.

We pleased to inform you that Dr. Niraj Mohan Chawake has recently joined our department (on Sep 29th) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Niraj Chawake has completed B.Tech. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from VNIT, Nagpur, India (2004-2008), and integrated M.Tech. + Ph.D. from IIT Madras (2017), India. After his Ph.D., he worked at Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science, Austria (2017-2020). His research is focused on fundamental and applied studies in the processing and properties of materials for high-temperature structural applications. His doctoral work was on the high-temperature deformation and creep studies of B2 aluminides with investigations on Joule heating and densification mechanisms during spark plasma sintering. During his postdoctoral tenure, he has worked on the processing of materials using high-pressure torsion, in-situ synchrotron deformation of various alloys, in-situ TEM deformation studies on HEA thin films. click here for more details

Vaishwik Bharatiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) is a collaborative initiative by S&T and academic organizations of India, which aims at bringing out a comprehensive roadmap to leverage the expertise of global Indian diaspora and our national luminaries for solving emerging challenges. The goal of this summit is to create an ecosystem of knowledge and foster scientific innovations through global outreach. This is indeed a great accomplishment. Material Advantage @ IIT Kanpur conducted an online presentation contest - "Thoughts in motion" on 15th of August. Participants submitted short presentations on Materials, Processing, Characterization, and Performance/Properties. Presentations were submitted as videos or slides with voiceover to be judged on the basis of originality, creativity, technical content, way of presentation, and animation clarity. Mr. Shashikant Gupta won the competition for his presentation on "Triboelectric Generator: A new age mechanical energy harvestor". Ms. Shipra Bajpai was the runner up for her presentation titled "Transparent Ceramics: Processing, Properties, and Applications". A consolation prize was awarded to Ms. Anshika Chaudhary, an undergraduate in the MSE department for her excellent talk on "Iron-Carbon phase diagram".

With great sadness, we inform you that Prof. G.S. Upadhyaya, Former Professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, passed away yesterday evening (19 July 2020) in Varanasi due to age-related ailments. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
Prof. Upadhyaya was born on 15th June 1939 in Varanasi. He joined Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur as Professor in 1976 after 11 years of service in the University of Roorkee. After serving as AICTE Emeritus Professor, he moved back to his native town Varanasi in 2004. After superannuation, he continued to be academically active and published 8 books and several papers. In fact, he kept participating and engaging in academic activities of the Department all his life. He instituted Prof. Bal Deva Upadhyaya Gold Medal for best M.Tech. thesis in the area of Physical Metallurgy and created an endowment fund for Annual Samsonov Memorial Lecture Series. His dedication and passion towards his field is exemplary. Prof. Upadhyay was a nationally and internationally known scholar in the field of Powder Metallurgy. He leaves behind a rich legacy in terms of stellar academic contributions (300 papers and 20 books) and his students (12 PhD and 35 MTech students).

Admission Notice for PhD/MTech/MDes/MS (By Research) Programmes 2020-21-I Semester



Prof. E C Subbarao is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on Ferroelectrics and Zirconia Ceramics. His pathbreaking work on Barium Titanate in the early fifties and his research on ionic conductivity in zirconia in the sixties are considered seminal contributions in the field. As the first Dean of Faculty at IIT Kanpur, Prof Subbarao helped Prof Kelkar, the founding Director, in setting up and nurturing this premier institute of technology in India in its formative years. As the founding Director of the Tata Research Development and Design Centre (established as a division of Tata Consultancy Services), under the guidance of Mr. JRD Tata and Mr. F C Kohli, he created a high-quality industrial research centre, dedicated to providing innovative solutions to the industry.
Prof Subbarao is rightly considered the father of materials science and engineering education, academic and industrial research and innovation in India. As the founding member of three organizations, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Electronics (DOE) and Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), he helped in nurturing the national S&T infrastructure in India.
Prof Subbarao was recently awarded the INAE Life Time Contribution Award in Engineering 2019 for pioneering contributions to ferroelectrics and zirconia ceramics and leadership in nurturing two world class institutions - IIT Kanpur (higher education) and TRDDC (industrial research). He was felicitated during the INAE Annual Convention held in Jaipur held on 13 Dec 2019.
Prof. Subbarao celebrated his 90th birthday last year. In his honor, Indian Institute of Metals has published a special issue titled "Special Topics in Advanced Materials Engineering". Dr. R A Mashelkar formally released the special issue on Jan 3, 2020 in Pune.


Department of MSE, IIT Kanpur is once again coming up with an ineffable event - RSD (Research Scholar Day) 2020, scheduled on 1st March. Prof Kannan M. Krishnan, an alumani of IIT Kanpur, visited the Department of Materials Science and Engineering on Feb 14, 2020. Prof. Krishnan interacted with the faculty members of MSE and also visited the departmental labs. As part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, an Open House for school children from the city of Kanpur and beyond was organized on Saturday (25th Jan 2020), where more than 3000+ school children visited the campus over the entire day. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering also set up a stall and showcased technologies and products, such as photovoltaic cells, bio-implants, flexible solar panels, etc. Student volunteers from MSE also conducted a quiz for school students visiting the stall making it a fun experience. Prof. Kinnor Chattopadhyay joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as Visiting Associate Professor on 08 Jan, 2020. Prof. Kinnor Chattopadhyay (BEng (Jadavpur), MEng (McGill), Ph.D. (McGill)) is a process metallurgist and has 12 years of experience in metallurgical process consulting and research. He is expert of heat, mass and fluid flow, metallurgical thermodynamics, liquid metals processing and casting and has worked with numerous clients internationally. He is currently the Dean's Catalyst Professor in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. We warmly welcome Prof. Kinnor to the MSE Department.

MSE IIT Kanpur has developed a marvelous technology to curb the radiation effect of chemotherapy by 80% with the help of magnetic nano capsule. This research is also published in Royal Society of Chemistry Soft Matter. Prof. Vivek Verma is working on this research field.
