Engineering Metallurgy Laboratory.

Information

The Engineering Metallurgy Lab, housing hands-on training equipments for the Core Course TA 201 and Departmental Compulsory Courses MME 470.  The core course TA201- Introduction to Manufacturing Processes has lab components pertaining to both mechanical engineering as well as metallurgical engineering aspects.  The UG students of second year are given hands-on training on various manufacturing techniques in this lab.  As a part of the course, the TA201 Engineering Metallurgy Lab in the Materials & Metallurgical Engineering was recently modernized through institute funds by procuring several state of the art equipments. The lab space was simultaneously reorganized in a major way to accommodate ~ 80 students on any given session. As part of the modernization exercise, students would now have a better in-depth understanding of the casting, materials joining, deformation processing techniques. Using the newly procured Induction Melting furnace, they can now melt not only lower melting materials but also cast iron and steels. Facilities which have been added in the fusion joining bay of the lab include Computer controlled MIG and TIG welding machines, a plastic welding machine and  modern 4 tips soldering set-ups. In order to ensure students from health hazards, these machines have been provided with fume hoods. The welding bay has also been provided with UV curtains to avoid the glare from the welding arcs. Besides, conventional furnaces, a microwave sintering furnace have also been introduced. With Microwave sintering furnace students be able to carry out consolidation of particulate alloys and composites at much reduced process time. For the purpose of defect analysis, an ultrasonic flaw detector with area-amplitude and distance-amplitude blocks having a TFT screen display and a binocular microscope have also been added in the lab. Recently one compaction Press with precision settings and load control has been installed for UG experiments and research works.
