New High Performance Computing (HPC) Facility of IITK in TOP 500 List

The newest version of TOP500 HPC list, which is issued twice yearly, was released on May 31, 2010, at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC'10) at Hamburg, Germany.

The new HPC of IITK, which has been ordered to Hewlett-Packard and is scheduled to arrive here in June 2010, has found a place in this list with a ranking of 369. This is the first time ever that IITK has featured in the TOP500 list since this ranking started in 1993. Also, IITK is the only Academic (degree awarding) Institute from India to have a place in the new list. Other HPC facilities from India on the new List are:

Computational Research Lab, Tata Sons (Rank 33)
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (Rank 94)
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (Rank 182)
IT Services Provider (B) India (Rank 389)

The new HPC of IITK is based on Intel Xeon Quadcore X5570 @2.93 GHz processors with a total of 2944 cores, 40 Gbps Infiniband network and 100 TB storage. It has a peak performance (Rpeak) of 34.5 TF and a maximal LINPACK performance (Rmax) of 29 TF. The entry level to the List moved up to 24.7 TF from 20 TF six months ago.

Among other Asian countries, China has 24 and Japan has 18 systems in the TOP500 List. More details can be found at: www.top500.org/lists/2010/06

IIT Kanpur is happy to have achieved this feat in its Golden Jubilee year. IITK thanks Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for generous support to set up this facility.
