ELECTRIC POWER DISTRIBUTION: REFORMS, AUTOMATION AND MANAGEMENT

May 10-14, 2004

Organized By:

Department of Electrical Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Kanpur- 208016

Text Box: INTRODUCTION

With ongoing regulatory, policy and structural changes in the Indian electricity industry following the Electricity Act 2003, the distribution utilities will have to directly compete with each other. Utilities will be required to develop capabilities for managing commercial operations and customer satisfaction. These utilities will have to ensure upgraded and dependable systems, adapt technologies for reliable power supply, mechanism for effective trading and resource management for profitable business.

To make the distribution systems more commercially viable and transparent, it is important to reduce the technical and commercial losses, to improve information flow as well as cash flow through better metering and billing, to have better energy efficiency and power quality. All these can be made possible through IT enabled solutions such as distribution automation (DA). In 2000, Ministry of Power launched Accelerated Power Development and Reform Program (APDRP) aimed at bringing the system losses to around 15%, ensuring reliability & quality of power supply and improving consumer satisfaction & system management thorough IT implementations.  Moreover, there is a great need of training and education on distribution system performance improvement options including demand side management (DSM) and distribution automation technologies to electric utility personnel, policy makers, planners, managers, investors, teachers and researchers.

This training workshop will provide a platform to an in-depth discussion on the various challenges and their possible remedies in electricity sector reforms, management and automation. Demonstration of the case studies based on the recent work carried out at I.I.T. Kanpur will also be presented.
