Background:
Biomaterials as well as their applications as artificial organs are widely recognized as an emerging area for material scientists, biotechnologists, chemists, engineers and medical professionals. Such materials are synthetically produced outside the human body and once found suitable, are placed as human implants. Therefore they essentially integrate with the living organs and participate in the functioning of living systems. Recent developments in the areas of material science and biological science have enabled an impressive progress in our attempts to develop new biomaterials. The development of new biocompatible materials (bulk or coating) and/or refinement of existing material composition/processing techniques are expected to broaden the diversity of applications of biomaterials in the coming years. The progress in biomaterials research clearly requires an improved understanding in multiple disciplines as well as the development of new design methodologies in order to obtain better materials properties in terms of both physical properties as well as the biological performance. In the above context, an International Conference on Design of Biomaterials (BIND-06) has been planned to bring together leading global experts, and to identify new challenges and emerging trends of such a highly multidisciplinary research area. The name of the conference originates from the fact that the research on Biomaterials essentially "binds" biologists/biotechnologists with Engineers (Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgy)/Materials scientists and clinicians (Orthopaedic surgeons, Dental surgeons, Ophthalmic surgeons, and Cardiac surgeons). An appropriate binding of research ideas/expertise ensures a comprehensive understanding of the processing-microstructure-properties (physical as well as in vitro / in vivo) of biocompatible materials.

Objectives:

  1. To identify new challenges and emerging trends in design of Biomaterials
  2. To serve as a platform for a large number of active researchers from various disciplines of biological sciences, metallurgy and materials science, ceramics, polymers, biotechnology as well as engineers, manufacturers, dentists and surgeons to participate and to share their latest research results
  3. To arrange a panel discussion on Biomaterials Education, Research and Industries: Future Perspectives
  4. To promote Biomaterial science in India
  5. To encourage new bilateral interactions between fellow scientists in India and USA
  6. To strengthen existing collaborations between scientists in India and USA
  7. To stimulate the minds of a large number of young researchers, who have either just entered or have decided to make a career in this multidisciplinary research area.

Scope :

The Design of Biomaterials is widening in several directions. The conference will provide a forum for discussion on all aspects of Design of Biomaterials , and it will foster the exchange of ideas, techniques, experiments and applications. The conference language will be English. All original contributions will be arranged in the form of plenary, keynote, invited, oral and poster presentations.
