MHRD FUNDS COMPUTER UPGRADATION AT IIT KANPUR

The Expenditure Finance Committee, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, has approved funding for the project, Upgradation of Computing Facilities in five IITs.

Under this project IIT Kanpur will get Rs. 18.5 crores in the 9th Plan. Major components of the project are: upgradation of Basic and Special Purpose Computing Facilities, Internet Connectivity and Information Services, Modern Class Rooms, Digital Library and Institute Automation.

Immediate (for the year 1998-99) benefits to the IIT Kanpur community will be:

• 2 Mbps Internet link
• professional hardware/software to manage Internet services
• IBM SP multiprocessor for compute intensive jobs
• Engineering Graphics workstations Nastran, Autocad, Fluent software
• RS6000/AIX servers to provide IBM environment to users
• entry level AS/400 server to provide OS/400 environment to users
• extra PCs to be put in remote access facilities
• Network connections and PCs in students' hostels.
