Keeping in mind the need to project the strengths of the Institute in a highly competitive world, an Information Cell has recently been constituted. The Cell will maintain relevant technical information of the Institute in a computerized form, most of it being accessible through the web page. The Cell will project accomplishments of the faculty, staff and students and specialized skills and facilities available within the Institute. The target audience would be the governmental funding agencies, industry leaders and influential personalities who can then draw the IIT Kanpur faculty into the mainstream of the decision making process.
The specific tasks to be taken up by the Information Cell are:
• Collect, organise and prioritize relevant information (past and present) about IIT Kanpur,
• Consolidate technical data in the web page, containing faculty achievements and student performance in an easily accessible form for internal as well as external consumption.
• Highlight research and consultancy services available for prospective industrial clients, and employment opportunities for highly skilled and motivated candidates,
• Develop the Institute web page along aesthetic as well as functional lines, so that data are available speedily and in an attractive manner,
• Assist in simplifying internal procedures, for example, store 'blank forms' on the website in an easy-to-download format, and
• Create a legal wing where academic decisions of import will be available to guide future decision-makers.
Other activities of the Information Cell include bringing out yearly brochures on research activities, preparation of the newsletter DIRECTIONS, and management of the Desktop Publishing Cell for printing official documents of the Institute.
The Information Cell is being set up in room FB 281. Its activities are expected to begin in March 1999.
