Technological advances brought significant changes to organizations and industries across the globe, creating an ever-increasing demand for professionals with analytical and managerial skills combined with sound technical knowledge. Foreseeing this need, IME Department of IIT Kanpur designed its M.Tech Programme to gain and hone necessary managerial skills for engineers.

A high score in the GATE examination is the first step towards securing an admission in the program. The high scorers then appear in the Department's own tests on comprehension and quantitative skills followed by a personal interview are the only way to get admitted in the curriculum. Passing through a selection process that guarantee the best of the available talents, the students are challenged with an equally tough academic program that focus on both learning and implementation.

The M.Tech program is the flagship program of IME department. It is one of the oldest to introduce industrial engineering in India. The program provides a perfect blend of industrial engineering and management science to its students. The well-defined structure of course work and a yearlong thesis work provides in-depth knowledge of concepts to students. The intervening summer internships is used for practical project work in industries.

The program focuses on developing expertise in management engineering. It covers diverse topics from both the management and engineering paradigms. Quantitative modeling methods, improvement of productivity, quality and profitability in the manufacturing sector, supply chain management and application of optimization techniques in finance, marketing and IT are some of the areas to which students are exposed.

IME Department emphasizes on the "methods" of understanding any systems. Rather than 'spoon-feeding', students are taught basic concepts and their analytical skills are then sharpened through a series of rigorous exercises. This approach helps to build strong reasoning and analytical abilities and best prepares them to take on real-world challenges. IME Department recognizes that mere course-work will not normally make one an effective manager. It is the rigor to which the IME faculty subjects its students, which imparts in them the potential to be a top notch manager.

In addition the department is equipped with the latest tools and systems used in the industries for the students to obtain hands-on experience. Having some of the most complicated software like product life cycle management, simulation, statistical analysis, financial modelling, process design and control, etc. in the well-equipped laboratories allow the students to learn the vital skills allowing them to succeed in future; both in industry and academia.

"The M.Tech program of IME (Industrial and Management Engineering) Department of IIT Kanpur has worldwide acclaim. The accolade for this acclaim can be attributed to the rigour through which the IME faculty subjects its students. Being an integral part of an institution of the stature of IIT Kanpur naturally helps the budding spark to imbibe all the values and ethos that have made it an epitome of excellence.

Our tryst with Engineering and Management started way back in 1974, when the Industrial and Management Engineering (IME) programme was initiated to teach methods to plan, design, implement and manage production and services. Our M.TECH. students take quantitative, financial and IT courses which find applications in Production Management (SCM/Logistics), Financial Engineering (Investment Research/Risk Management/Financial services) and Marketing Engineering.

With carefully designed syllabus, we keep up to the true IIT Kanpur tradition of sensitising ourselves with the latest in the industry. The M.Tech course in IME has evolved as a program for developing Managers from Engineers with cross-functional skills with special emphasis in quantitative techniques and operations. The class being a heterogeneous mix of engineers from diverse fields naturally enriches the learning environment, turning into a fountainhead of vibrant ideas.

Moreover students are given a chance to have the experience of the industry through summer internships. They have worked in Financial Risk Analytics/Portfolio Management, Business Analytics and Intelligence, Supply Chain Management as well as on ERP systems as summer internships."

Through the program they are imparted different management skills. The program is quite rigorous and the students develop themselves to become overall personalities.

Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) Policy:

Similarly, placement process during Morning Slot (Afternoon Slot) would generally begin at 9 am (2 pm) and conclude by 1 pm (6 pm).
If more than one company is scheduled during a particular day/slot, the placement process for all such companies would start around the same time. Due to a possibility of overlap across the final selection list of the companies during a single day/slot we highly encourage the companies to come up with a waitlist along with the final selection list. The companies shall submit the list of selected students with waitlist (if any) only to the Faculty Placement Coordinator, MBA program IIT Kanpur. The results of the all such companies will be announced together by the Faculty Placement Coordinator at an appropriate time by the end of the respective day/slot. In case a candidate receives offers from more than one company, he/she would have to take a spot decision to choose a company. No deviation in the same would be permitted later.
We expect the recruiting company to match up the high level of corporate standards and adhere to its absorption plan for the selected candidates. Local logistics and hospitality at IIT Kanpur will be provided by the placement team.

"To transform today's professionals in technology into tomorrow's world class leaders. The emphasis of MBA at IIT Kanpur is to nurture leaders who dare to unlearn and relearn in the dynamic world of business"

"Innovation in management is as important as the science and technology of any engineering practice. MBA students of IIT Kanpur have been exhibiting leadership qualities and passion to serve the society as responsible managers of the corporate world, true to the IIT tradition.

The MBA programme at IIT Kanpur was initiated with the guiding principle that a sound technical expertise coupled with right management acumen, is the key to survival in a contemporary competitive environment. In fact, the programme is a testimony to one of the key strengths of IIT Kanpur, which is its articulate understanding of the existing and future needs of the corporate world. This inherent dynamism is expressed through path-breaking innovations in both its programmes and its research to keep abreast with the latest.

Globally accepted as a vibrant seat of academic and professional excellence, IIT Kanpur is known for its innovative approach, participative culture and academic rigour. Over eighteen thousand engineers, technologists, scientists, managers and entrepreneurs from IIT Kanpur are today active across the globe.

Though the MBA programme offered by the IME department is still relatively, nascent, it retains a strong interaction with the industry on account of its courses in industrial Management. The strong industry linkages ultimately go a long way in providing a holistic approach to research and education. Special efforts to recruit talented faculty on a global basis and stringent admission procedures to select brilliant students across the country, ensures a pool of formidable intellectual capital at any given time in the campus. This helps in a healthy and dynamic exchange of ideas which incubates leaders for the corporate world. No wonder that IIT is perhaps India's most recognized brand the world over.

Needless to say that the MBA students of IIT Kanpur have been exhibiting leadership qualities and passion to serve the society as responsible managers of the corporate world, true to IIT tradition. Students of the earlier batches have carved out a niche for themselves as assets to the organizations. This fact is reinforced by enthusiastic response from the corporate world in the form of placements. I feel confident that this pool of professionals will be another feather in the glorious crown of IIT Kanpur. I wish them all the very best in all their future endeavours."

Prof. Indranil Manna

Director, IIT Kanpur

"The engine of today's economy - the business world is increasingly becoming demanding and dynamic. In such a challenging scenario managing people, information and technology in an integrated fashion is going to be the mantra for a successful manager. The MBA programme at IIT Kanpur is an attempt to address this concern in a scientific spirit. Being an integral part of an institution of the stature of IIT Kanpur naturally helps the budding spark to imbibe all the values and ethos that have made it an epitome of excellence

Our tryst with management started way back in 1974, when the Industrial and Management Engineering (IME) programme was initiated to teach methods to plan, design, implement and manage production and services. The MBA programme introduced in the year 2001, was thus a structured culmination of the process of dissemination of knowledge that had been gathered over the years.

The rising complexity of the business environment has made it mandatory for an engineer to unshackle himself from the confines of mere technical competencies and assume the role of a complete manager. The course of MBA at IIT Kanpur is uniquely designed to train engineers into managers with a holistic outlook. The course is rooted in the Indian environment, along with the required international perspective. With a carefully designed syllabus , we keep up to the true IIT Kanpur tradition of sensitizing ourselves with the latest in the industry. The emphasis is on building people skills, with focus on team skills, indispensable to any organization. The class being a heterogeneous mix of engineers from diverse fields naturally enriches the learning environment, turning it into a fountainhead of vibrant ideas.

The response from the industry has been very enthusiastic and encouraging. This bears testimony to the value adding output that the students of MBA at IIT Kanpur have been giving to the industry and the society. I am sure that the encouragement from the industry will continue in the coming years, as an enforcement of the esteem in which IIT Kanpur is held."
