The Hand represents the Vitarka Mudra, a non-verbal mode of communication and self-expression used by Lord Buddha for Intellectual Argument, Discussion, Debate and Appeasement. It represents the interactive discussion, deliberation and the high level of communication, teaching and learning. The tips of the thumb , touching the index finger and forming a circle is the sign of the Wheel of Law or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom (Knowledge, Compassion and Fraternity). This hand is also the right hand of the Dharmachakra Mudra and symbolizes one of the most important moments in the life of Lord Buddha, the occasion when he preached, after his Enlightenment in Gaya (near Patna, Bihar state), to his companions the first sermon in the ‘Deer Park at Sarnath' (near Benaras or Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh state). The other three fingers remain extended and represent the three vehicles of the Buddha's teachings, namely- the middle finger represents the 'hearers' of the teachings, the ring finger represents the 'solitary realizers ' and the Little finger represents the Mahayana or 'Great Vehicle'.

The white background of the hand represents purity and peace.
