Internal structure of atoms, electronic structure, chemical bonding, and chemical properties of elements. Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and its application in Earth Sciences. Aquatic geochemistry, primary silicates and chemical weathering, acids and bases, dissolution and precipitation reactions, mineral stability diagrams, Eh-pH diagrams, oxidation-reduction reactions. The origin and evolution of Earth and the solar system through high temperature chemical processes, trace elements in igneous processes, modeling trace element partition during magma genesis. Radiogenic isotope geology and geochronology. Stable isotope geochemistry. Earth’s hydrosphere and its interaction with surficial rocks, sediments, soils, biosphere and the atmosphere.

Geology of Fuels (ES454)

Origin of petroleum, source rock and maturation of kerogen, primary and secondary migration; reservoirs – porosity, permeability and capillary pressure, porosity types in clastic and carbonate reservoirs, reservoir heterogeneity, drive mechanisms; traps and seals – classification of traps; composition of petroleum, physical and chemical properties of oil; brief idea about the hydrocarbon resources of India, the classification and stratigraphy of petroliferous basins of India. Origin of coal, classification of coal, morphology, composition of peat, lignite, anthracite. Coal series, terminology, structure and petrography of coals; physical and chemical properties of coal; coal reserve in India; brief idea about the world coal resources; exploration of coal; utilization of coal- combustion and gasification of coal; coal and environment.
