Thesis Title:
Characterizing Human Disturbance and Paleoclimatic Reconstruction in the Parts of Gangetic Plains Using Sedimentary Archives from Wetlands and Floodplain Lakes.

Abstract:

Now it’s a well established fact that human are inducing their foot-prints to the natural environments and the wetlands and floodplain lakes are not an exception. From a very early time of the Ganges plains provided a fertile and hence liveable land to the ever-growing and flourishing civilizations. In return, these plains have been disturbed from their natural course and the changes subjected to them either by human interference or from natural causes are stored in their sediments. Thus, they are now acting as sedimentary archives from which high resolution proxies for paleoclimatic studies as well as human interferences could be deduced. The sediment cores could be analysed for lake varves, isotopic relationships between them with their temporal distribution and the geophysical approach could lead to the better understanding of the genesis of these wetlands. Remote sensing and GIS would be providing the spatial distribution as well as temporal behaviour of these plains.
