Real Time Digital Simulation Facility

  • Real Time Digital Simulation Facility

  • Located in ACES-105 AND Supported by DST under IRHPA (5 years project of about Rs. 7.62 crores)

  • Objective is to carry out advance research by ‘Power and Control’ group RTDS and to impart training to power utilities and faculty in other institutions

  • RTDS features include

    • The 6-Rack RTDS at IITK is the biggest in the country and also biggest in any Asian Universities.

    • Each rack has three PB5 processor (1.7 GHz), large no. of I/O Cards, inter-processor and inter-rack communication through fibre optic link.

    • Can be interfaced to any controller or relays through amplifiers and also SCADA equipment using standard commercial protocol.

    • Dynamic simulation possible in the steps of 2-50 µsecs. Can simulate power system of 864 nodes (288, 3-phase buses)

    • Good platform for Hardware In Loop (HIL) testing in real time environment.

    • The minimum commitment is to test it for Synchrophasor based Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) and Renewable Integration (both form important component of Smart Grid).
