International Travel Support to Students
Interaction with peers and networking is the best way to enhance one's knowledge and understanding. International conferences offer this natural avenue. Travel grants for attending conferences overseas are few and far between. The International Travel Support grants may be instituted individually or funds may be donated to a pool fund. Graduate students can be partially supported to attend international conferences. A travel support of Rs. 20,000/- or 50,000/- to one student per year would require an endowment of Rs. 4.0 Lakhs/10.0 Lakhs (US$10,000/25,000).
Recently, IITK started a new intitiative to provide partial travel support to students for presentation of their research papers in conferences abroad. Students are provided travel assistance ranging from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 40,000 subject to their faculty supervisor and Head of the Department also extending them financial support. During 2005-06, support was offered to 49 students; of these, 43 students actually availed support from RPG office, one student found sufficient funds from elsewhere, and five students could not attend the conference for visa and other reasons. The donors may contribute any sum to the fund at any time. Also, one may endow a named travel fellowship by a one-time donation of Rs. 8.0 Lakhs.
Cash Paper Award
To further promote research, the Institute has started a program to give a cash award of Rs 10,000 to any full time student of IITK who publishes a paper in a journal listed by the ISI Web of Science. In case of more than one author, the prize money shall be shared by all the authors. The awards are effective from 1st April 2006.
