Kalyanmoy Deb holds the Deva Raj Chair Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and is a professor of Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Deb joined the institute in 1992, prior to which he was a visiting research assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prof. Deb received his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and prior to getting his masters and PhD degrees from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, USA in 1989 and 1991, respectively, he worked with Engineers India Limited, New Delhi during 1985-87.
Prof. Deb's research interests are in computational optimization, modeling and design, and evolutionary algorithms. He is well-known for his pioneering studies in evolutionary multi-objective optimization. He is the recipient of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences for the year 2005. He has received the `Thomson Citation Laureate Award' from Thompson Scientific for having highest number of citations in the Computer Science area during the past ten years in India. He is a fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Indian National Academy of Sciences, and International Society of Genetic and Evolutionary Computation (ISGEC). He has received Fredrick Wilhelm Bessel Research award and Humboldt fellowship from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2003 and 1998, respectively. He has written two text books on optimization and more than 200 international journal and conference research papers. He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation and an editorial board members of five major journals. Prof. Deb works extensively with industries and collaborates with key researchers in optimization from all over the world. In India, he has been instrumental in introducing optimization research and application to academia and industries by arranging short courses and visits, and performing collaborative projects performed through his research laboratory called 'Kanpur Genetic Algorithms Laboratory'.
