Professor S. Sampath Chair at IIT Kanpur

Family members, friends and admirers of Professor S. Sampath, former Director, IIT Kanpur have taken the initiative to establish "Professor S. Sampath Chair" at IIT Kanpur. They have collectively contributed to the endowment corpus under the leadership of Professor S. Ranganthan, younger brother of Professor Sampath. The chair position is offered to a distinguished faculty member of IITK so that he/she would receive an honorarium, in addition to the salary. The Chair was launched on April 15, 2005 the 80th birth anniversary of Professor Sampath.

Professor Asok Kumar Mallik was born in 1947 at Kolkata, West Bengal. He attended The Scottish Church Collegiate School at Kolkata and finished his higher secondary education in 1962. He obtained his Bachelor and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College , Shibpur in 1967 and 1969, respectively. He continued there as a Teacher-Trainee until 1970, when he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi as a lecturer. In 1971 he moved to IIT Kanpur as a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D from IIT Kanpur in 1973. Since 1982, he is a Professor in the same department.

During his stay at IIT Kanpur, he went as a commonwealth scholar to Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, Southampton , England where he spent 16 months. Later on, he went to TH, Aachen and TU, Darmstadt, Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow for a total duration of two years including four summers.

He has taught a large number of UG and PG courses, mainly in the broad area of Mechanics. These include Mechanics of Solid, Theory of Mechanisms and Machines, Dynamics, Vibrations etc. He has actively participated in the first year course on Physics. He has fabricated a large number of teaching (visual) aids, two educational movies and a forty–lecture video course for transmission in a national channel. Lately he is involved in a series of popular lectures on Elementary Mathematics.

His research areas include, Analysis and Control of Mechanical Vibration, Nonlinear Dynamics, Kinematics and Robotics. He has so far guided 9 Ph.D and 50 M. Tech students. He, along with his students and colleagues, has authored seventy research papers in International Journals. Many results reported by him find prominent mention in a number of international textbooks and handbooks. He has authored/coauthored six textbooks published in India and abroad.

He has been elected a fellow of The Indian National Academy of Engineering, The National Academy of Sciences; India , The Indian Academy of Sciences and The Indian National Science Academy. He received the honorary life membership of The Association of Machines and Mechanisms for life-time contribution. He is a recipient of The Distinguished Teacher Award of IIT Kanpur.
