Professor Deepak Kunzru was born in Gwalior on third August
1947. He completed his Senior Cambridge in 1962 from Methodist
High School, Kanpur. He obtained his B.Tech. in Chemical
Engineering from I.I.T. Kanpur in 1968. He pursued his higher
studies in the United States and completed his M.S. in 1970
from Bucknell University and PhD in 1972 from the University
of Pittsburgh. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Dalhousie
University, Canada, he joined the Dept. of Chemical Engineering
at IITK in 1974 as Assistant Professor. Since 1982, he is
a Professor in the same department.
Professor Kunzru's main research interests are in the area of microstructured reactors, chemical reaction engineering, pyrolysis of hydrocarbons and petroleum processing. He has published more than 75 papers in reputed international journals and has edited one book. He has made outstanding contributions in the area of kinetics and reaction engineering over the last 35 years. He has not only developed models for pyrolysis of several hydrocarbons but also for describing the complex phenomena of coke deposition during pyrolysis. He has also made significant contributions in the areas of adsorption, chemical reactor modeling, catalysis and modeling of petroleum refining processes. His current research focuses on the use of monolithic reactors for gas-liquid reactions, modeling of fluid cracking catalysts and development of a microfuel processor. In addition to research, he has taught and developed a wide variety of UG and PG courses.
Professor Kunzru has served as an expert in several national committees.
Presently, he is a member of the Programme Advisory Committee
(Chemical Engineering) of DST, DST Fast Track Committee
for Engineering Sciences and Research Advisory Council of
Indian Oil Corporation R&D. He has been honored by the
Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers through its prestigious
Herdillia award for excellence in basic research in Chemical
Engineering and has also been elected as Fellow of the Indian
National Academy of Engineering.
