Professor Deepak Gupta was born in 1965
in Lucknow. He obtained his B. Tech. degree in Metallurgical
Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur,
in 1987. The graduate studies were completed in Materials
Science and Engineering, with a M.S. in 1989 from the University
of Florida, Gainesville, Florida (USA) and Ph. D. in 1993
from the University of California, Berkeley, California (USA).
Following the graduate studies, he conducted a year long Post-Doctoral
work at the Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois (USA) and
then another three years, beginning 1994, were spent in semiconductor
device manufacturing and design at the Semiconductor Products
Sector of Motorola Inc., Phoenix, Arizona (USA).
Professor
Deepak Gupta joined IIT Kanpur at the end of 1997 as an Assistant
Professor in the department of Materials and Metallurgical
Engineering, where he works to this date.
Research
interests of Professor Deepak Gupta keep changing every few
years. Early days were spent on froth flotation of phosphates,
followed by microwave processing of ceramic composites and
electromagnetic casting of aluminum and then separation of
uranium contaminants from soil. He also worked on silicon
device manufacturing and then design of GaAs based semiconductor
devices. In IIT Kanpur, after a brief stint with developing
GaN based devices, his research focused on organic electronics.
Specifically, he researches organic light emitting diodesation,
and organic thin film transistors. His main research interests
are a) displays and electronics materials, b) process, materials
and device modeling and c) study of defects in electronic
materials.
Professor
Deepak Gupta maintains close interaction with industry. For
a display maker, he has led a team to develop passive matrix,
96x64 and 128x28 resolution, full colour displays for small
size applications such as mobile phones.
Currently,
Professor Deepak Gupta is also the Coordinator of the Samtel
Center for Display Technologies.
