Summer Undergraduate Research
Grant for Excellence (SURGE): IIT Kanpur
runs a ten week programme called Summer Undergraduate
Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) during the summer
semester every year. The programme aims to promote
a culture of research amongst undergraduate students
of not just IIT Kanpur but also of some other select
academic institutes in the country. Under this program
students from all over the country are invited to
participate in the summer research program and they
are mentored by IIT Kanpur faculty members. Another
important part of this program is student exchange
with some leading universities of the world. IITK
students go for a ten week research work to these
universities, and their students come to IIT Kanpur
to participate in SURGE. Currently, the universities
participating in the program are Caltech, Rice, Ecole
Centrale, and Ecole Polytechnique. So far 199 students
and 158 faculty members have participated in the program.
A major part of the expenses of the program are covered
through donations received under AGP.
International Travel
Support to Students: Students are
encouraged to write high quality research
papers for important conferences, and participate
in these events. Partial financial support
is provided to them towards travel, registration
and other expenses. The Support was started
during the financial year 2005-06. During
last six year Support has been sanctioned
to 540 students to attend international
conferences.
Cash Awards to
students for journal papers: Through
this initiative students are encouraged
to write high quality research papers for
publication in ISI Web Journals. A student
publishing a paper in any journal listed
by the ISI Web of Science receives a cash
award of Rs. 10,000. Maximum two awards
are to be given during a degree course.
The Support was started during the financial
year 2005-06. During last six year 814 students
have received cash awards for publishing
their research papers in reputed journal.
Alumni Merit-Cum-Means
Scholarships: The Annual Gift Programme
also enables the Institute to provide scholarships
to deserving students who are not able to
receive support through the limited number
of government funded or endowed scholarships.
The Support was started during the financial
year 2005-06. During last six years 67 students
have benefitted from this program.
Support for filing
Patents: IITK encourages filing
of patents by covering the costs associated
with patent filing (including US patents)
using the Annual Gift Programme donations.
Up to financial year 2009-10 Institute researchers
(both faculty and students) have filed 57
patents from the support from AGP Fund.
Opportunity College
Project:The Opportunity College
Project was started in December 2006, which
involves free of cost teaching of English,
Arithmetic, Accounting, and Computer Skills
to unemployed graduates (or under employed)
youth living in and around IIT Kanpur campus.
The teachings classed are arranged by IITK
students and campus community members as
part time tutors. Besides imparting vocational
skills, this program has been successful
in inspiring and motivating underprivileged
youths for a better future. As on December
2010, out of 240 trained students, 27 were
successfully engaged in job or job related
training. Some students got placed in primary/secondary
schools in Kanpur, few got selected in Indian
Air Force, U.P Police, few of them got jobs
as Accountant/office assistants in various
private companies. The Project is fully
funded by AGP Fund.
Development of
Schools in IITK campus: The Institute has two schools 'Kishlay school' and 'campus school' in the campus where the wards of Institute faculty and staff members are provided with pre-primary and primary education. The Opportunity School is established for the wards of underprivileged staff not in regular service in the Institute. A partial support to these Schools is given from the AGP Fund for their development.
F M Radio:
IITK has started F M Radio station for academic
purpose in the campus. The Radio station
was inaugurated during IITK Golden Jubilee
year. Partial financial support to run the
establishment of Radio Station has been
started from AGP Fund.
There are many more student related activities which are planned to be supported from AGP Fund in near future.
