Mr. Som Mittal (BT/MME/1973)
Mr. Som Mittal is the former President of NASSCOM, a premier trade body for the IT-BPO Industry in India, and is playing a key role to enable NASSCOM and the industry to realize its strategic vision of ‘Transform Business and Transform India’. With more than three decades of experience in the IT and automotive sector, Som Mittal is a seasoned Indian business executive.
Mr. Mittal received his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1973 and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1975. He began his career in the engineering and automotive industry serving at Larsen & Toubro, Escorts and Denso from 1975 to 1989. From 1989 to 1994, he served Wipro as the Chief Executive of their PC Server and Services Division. From 1994 to 1999, he served as the MD of Digital Equipment India Ltd., a company engaged in providing Technology Solutions to corporations including Banks and Financial Institutions. From 1999 to 2006, he was the MD of Digital GlobalSoft (an HP subsidiary); a software services company providing global solutions. From 2006 to 2007, he workd as the Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific and Japan, at HP.
With more than 22 years of experience in IT industry, he has handled both domestic and international operations and is familiar with leveraging technology in corporations. He has also served as the President of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), a position held since 2008. He has worked tirelessly to advance the interests of IT and Business Process Outsourcing companies with head-quarters in India. Under his tenure, the industry grew from $60 billion in 2008 to $108 billion in 2013 during the most turbulent economic environment. He also set up the Data Security Council of India which promotes data protection and develops best practices for security and privacy.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mittal has worked with a number of organizations. Having served in leadership positions at multinational companies like HP and Wipro, he has a strong command over the dynamics of the IT industry at an international level. From work at the institutional level with trade associations, he has also become a skilled public policy advocate. He has held some key positions as well such as a member of the Indian Prime Minister’s Committee on National e-Governance, a board member at the Institutes of Technolo-gy and the Global Advisory Council of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance. He is a frequent speaker at International and National conferences and is currently on several Boards and associated with several NGOs. The Financial Express of India called him an industry “doyen.”
