National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) initiative to promulgate quality education among the Engineering Colleges in the Country through Video and Web-based learning materials. It is implemented in a collaborative fashion involving premier educational institutions like seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc),

The main objective of this program is to enhance quality of engineering education in the country by developing  curriculum based video and web courses.

The program took off under the chairmanship of Prof. MS Anath Director, IIT Madras in 2003. With faculty and Instructional Design teams, participating from each of the participating Institutions, the effort has produced quality lectures in video format as well as web-based format.

Program Implementation Committee (PIC) had a mammoth task of deciding on the core team in each Institution and the Infrastructure. Each IIT and IISc decided on the participating faculty and the corresponding courses. The decision for Infrastructure development was left upto the institutions.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has setup a Media Technology Center and a Web Studio to assist in development of courses for the above program.
