Topic Nitrides, Carbides and Chalcogenides: Novel Electrocatalysts for Energy Systems

There have been consistent efforts in searching for new materials to catalyse various electrochemical reactions of interest. Devices such as metal-air batteries are gaining importance and development of electrode materials play vital role in realizing their potential. Hence, development of electrocatalysts for reactions such as oxygen reduction (ORR), oxygen evolution (OER) is essential. There have been consistent efforts to find good hydrogen evolving materials as well.

Our group has been involved in developing and understanding interfaces involving novel layered chalcogenides such as PdPS and MoSSe; nitrides and carbides such as TiN and TiC for various reactions of interest. The present lecture will discuss our recent contributions in this direction.

Dr. S. Sampath is a Professor at the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His group is interested in understanding various interfaces involving new and novel materials based on exfoliated graphite, graphene oxide, transition metal nitrides and carbides, layered chalcogenides, Langmuir – Blodgett films and self assembled organic systems. Electrochemical energy systems (fuel cells, batteries), sensors, detection / analysis using surface enhanced Raman scattering are some of the applications that are demonstrated in his laboratory, using these materials. His work has been well recognized by peers and he is a recipient of Bhatnagar prize, elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and Indian National Science Academy in addition to being a J C Bose National fellow.
