Departmental Vision

The Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur is serving the nation since 1961 by producing high quality technical workforce needed by industry, R&D organizations, and academic institutions. The Department offers B. Tech., B. Tech. - M. Tech. Dual degree in Civil Engineering, and M.Tech. degree in Civil Engineering with Seven specializations, i.e., Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geoinformatics, Environmental Engineering and Infrastructure Engineering & Management. The Department also has a vibrant Ph.D. programme in all the aforementioned specializations. The academic activities of the Department emphasize deep understanding of the fundamental principles, development of creative ability to handle the challenges of Civil Engineering, and the analytical ability to solve problems, which are interdisciplinary in nature. The Department also encourages its students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, essential for development, nurturing of team spirit, and developing organizational skills. The faculty members of the department are involved in high quality research and consultancy activities, and they continue to enjoy academic leadership role in the country.

The broad objective of the department is to achieve international recognition for excellence in research and teaching, such that it is ranked as the top Civil Engineering department in the country and, thus, it becomes the top choice of graduate students for higher education and prospective faculty for their career.

Faculty

The number of regular faculty members, adjunct faculty and visiting faculty in Department are 34, 02 and 01, respectively in the current year 2018-19.

Principal Scientific Officer (PSO)

There is 1 PSO in the Department.

Prospective Faculty

The department regularly invites applications from Indian nationals for faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level in Environmental Engineering, Geoinformatics, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Infrastructure Engineering and Management

Requirements

Foreign national here means a person who does not have either an Indian passport or a PIO/OCI card. Foreign nationals can be offered a contractual appointment for up to five years. The appointment can be renewed thereafter.

Minimum Qualification (for Assistant Professor) is Ph.D. with first class or equivalent (in terms of grades, etc.) in the preceding degree in the appropriate branch, with an outstanding and consistent academic record in all preceding degrees.

For a fresh Ph.D., without experience, the position of Assistant Professorship is offered on a contractual basis for the first three years, which are subsequently regularized afterwards. For those with three or more years of teaching/research/industrial experience, a regular appointment can be made. Details of the present areas of research of CE faculty members and facilities available, etc., are available at the departmental website (http://www.iitk.ac.in/ce/).

Applications for the faculty position are accepted round the year and are given prompt consideration. The applications have to be submitted at the online portal (https://pingala.iitk.ac.in/IITKFR-0/login).

Staff

The number of regular staff in the Department are 24 (3 Administrative and 21 Technical).

Laboratories

The number of laboratories and facilities in the department are 6 and 4, respectively. The laboratories are namely, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geoinformatics, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering. Various other facilities are Computational facility, Aeronet and MPLNET, Pseudo Dynamic Test Facility and the National Aerosol Facility.

Admission

Admission to Ph.D Program

The applicant must have a master's degree in engineering with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or CPI of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a master's degree in engineering are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI. Applicants with bachelor's degree in engineering must have marks/CPI not below 75% marks (or CPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale). Applicants from non-CFTI (central funded technical institutions) must also have a valid GATE score. Applicants with master's degree in science or an allied area from a non-CFTI, satisfying each of the following criteria may be considered for admission into the Ph.D. programme: (a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master's degree, (b) first division in bachelor's degree, and (c) JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE. B.Tech/BS (4-year) students from CFTIs having CPI of 7.5 or more and M.Sc. students from CFTIs having CPI of 7.0 or more are eligible to get admission and financial assistance in the Ph.D. program without GATE score.

Admission to M.Tech Program

The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science with, 1) not below 55% marks or, 2) Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale, If the minimum pass marks/CPI of the bachelors/masters program is greater than above, then that is applicable. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI.

Admission to M.S. (Research) Program

The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science with, 1) not below than 55% marks or, 2) Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale, If the minimum pass marks/CPI of the bachelors/masters program is greater than above, then that is applicable. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI.

Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The department also recruits postdoctoral fellows under the Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship scheme of IIT Kanpur. The candidates seeking postdoctoral positions in the department must have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or any closely related fields. Doctoral candidates who have submitted their thesis may also apply, but the appointment is offered only after the completion of the Ph.D. degree. Postdoctoral applications are accepted round the year and are given prompt consideration.

Interested candidates may send their Curriculum to the Head, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur via e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

The conversion to dual degree programme (B.Tech-M.Tech or B.Tech-MBA) are subjected to the following criteria

The department allows conversion of its B.Tech. students to pursue M.Tech. in any one of the aforementioned specializations. However, the conversion is subjected to the following criteria.

1. For category A, the student must have to choose a supervisor from the Department of Civil Engineering

2. For all categories, the student needs to have a minimum CPI of 6 (at the end of either 5th, 6th or 7th semester for category A, and at the end of 6th semester for category B and C). However, in exceptional circumstances, the department (DUGC) has discretionary power to relax this requirement based on recommendations from the faculty and considering the general sincerity, inclination and overall promise of the candidate. However, this is subjected to the final decision taken by the Senate and its standing committee (SUGC).

3. The student should not have any backlog in any of the Institute Core (IC) or in the Departmental Compulsory (DC) courses.

Students

The number of B.Tech., B.Tech.-M.Tech. (Dual), M.Tech., MS by Research and Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering Dept. are 404, 38, 111, 11 and 103, respectively.
