ADMISSIONS TO POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

A postgraduate (PG) education broadens the perspective and inculcates the habit of original, creative, and independent thinking. PG education in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur is aimed at attaining an understanding of the basic scientific principles underlying various disciplines in Civil Engineering.

In addition, the research component of the PG programmes is meant to develop capabilities to confidently undertake independent analysis of complex field situations. Keeping in view the needs of the society and the challenging problems faced by the profession, postgraduate programmes have been developed in several fields of specialization. The Department offers M.Tech., M.S. (Research), and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering in seven specializations (Environmental Engineering, Geoinformatics, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering & Management, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering).

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

For the M.Tech. and M.S. (Research) programmes, admissions are offered once a year (for the semester starting in the month of July in that year). Candidates are selected on the basis of GATE score and called in the month of April for written test and/or interview in the month of May. Some of these candidates, with exceptional performance in their qualifying degree, may be offered direct admission in the month of April. Admissions based on written test and/or interview are offered after about two weeks of test/interview

For the Ph.D. programme, admissions are offered throughout the year. Short listed candidates are called for interview in the months of May and December for admissions in the semesters beginning in July and December, respectively, and for walk-in-interview for admissions during a semester

Applications for admissions in the semester starting in July 2016 have to be filled online. The online admissions portal is here. This portal will be available only from March 18 to April 11. The instructions given on this portal are to be followed for submitting all certificates and application fee.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be careful while completing the preferences in the application form. Geotechnical Engineering and Transportation Engineering groups will only consider applicants who have given these areas as their first or second preferences. You will not be allowed to change the preferences once the form is submitted.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

M.Tech. Programme

The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI. Further eligibility requirements are given below:

Environmental Engineering (EE): Bachelors degree preferably in Civil Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Agricultural Engineering / Biotechnology or Master of Science in all areas. All candidates must have mathematics as a subject at least up to 10+2 level.

Geoinformatics (GI): Bachelors degree in Civil/Mining/Electrical/Computer Science/ Electronics Engineering/Information Technology/Geoinformatics, or Master of Science in Earth Science and related areas or Geography/Physics/Mathematics/Environmental Sciences. Candidates with M.Sc. degree must have mathematics as one of the subjects at B.Sc. level.

Geotechnical Engineering: degree in Civil Engineering.

Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering: Bachelors degree in Civil/Agriculture Engineering. The candidates must have taken at least one mathematics course at the undergraduate level.

Infrastructure Engineering and Management: Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. Some candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Building Construction and allied subjects may also be considered.

Structural Engineering: Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. Some candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Building Construction and allied subjects may also be considered.

Transportation Engineering: Bachelors degree in Civil/Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering.

Notes:

1. In addition to the above, a valid GATE score is also needed.

2. The GATE requirement is waived for B.Tech. graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CGPA/CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CGPA/CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B.Tech. However, such candidates are not entitled for Institute Assistantship if their overall CGPA/CPI is below 8.0.

3. Candidates with AMIE certificates are not eligible to apply.

MS (Research) Programme

Same as in M. Tech. programme

Ph.D. Programme

The applicant must have a master's degree in engineering with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or CPI of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a master's degree in engineering are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI.

Candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering with marks/CPI not below 75% marks (or CPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale), or a master’s degree in science or an allied area, satisfying each of the following criteria may be considered for admission into the Ph.D. programme: (a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master’s degree, (b) first division in bachelor’s degree, and (c) JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE. However, a valid GATE score is needed for the candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering, if they have not graduated from a CFTI (centrally funded technical institute).
