ADMISSIONS TO POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

A postgraduate (PG) education broadens the perspective and inculcates the habit of original, creative, and independent thinking. PG education in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur is aimed at attaining an understanding of the basic scientific principles underlying various disciplines in Civil Engineering. In addition, the research component of the PG programmes is meant to develop capabilities to confidently undertake independent analysis of complex field situations. Keeping in view the needs of the society and the challenging problems faced by the profession, postgraduate programmes have been developed in several fields of specialization.  The Department offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering in five specializations (Geoinformatics, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering), and Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering. The Department also administers the interdisciplinary M.Tech. programme in Environmental Engineering & Management (EEM). This page provides the details for admissions to the M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in Civil Engineering, while the details for admissions to the M.Tech. programme in EEM are available here.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

For the M.Tech. programme, admissions are offered once a year (for the semester starting in the month of July in that year). Candidates are selected on the basis of GATE score and called in the month of April for written test and/or interview in the month of May. Some of these candidates, with exceptional performance in their qualifying degree, may be offered direct admission in the month of April. Admissions based on written test and/or interview are offered after about two weeks of test/interview.

For the Ph.D. programme, admissions are offered throughout the year. Short listed candidates are called for interview in the months of May and December for admissions in the semesters beginning in July and December, respectively, and for walk-in-interview for admissions during a semester.

Applications for admissions in the semester starting in July 2014 have to be filled online. The online admissions portal is here. This portal will be available only from March 28 to April 14. The instructions given on this portal are to be followed for submitting all certificates and application fee. Last date for the receipt of a completed application form (with fee and supporting documents) at the Department is April 17. Application forms can be downloaded from here for admissions through walk-in-interview.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

M.Tech. Programme

The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI. Further eligibility requirements are given below:

Geoinformatics: B.Tech./B.E. degree in Civil/Mining/Electrical/Computer Science/Electronics Engineering/Information Technology/Geoinformatics, or M.Sc. degree in Earth Science streams/Geography/ Physics/Mathematics/Environmental Sciences. Candidates with M.Sc. degree must have mathematics as one of the subjects at B.Sc. level.

Geotechnical Engineering: B.Tech./B.E. degree in Civil Engineering.

Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering: B.Tech./B.E. degree in Civil/Agriculture Engineering. The candidates must have taken at least one mathematics course at the undergraduate level.

Structural Engineering: B.Tech./B.E. degree in Civil Engineering. Some candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Building Construction and allied subjects may also be considered.

Transportation Engineering: B.Tech./B.E. degree in Civil/Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering.

Notes:

 1.  In addition to the above, a valid GATE score is needed.

 2.  The GATE requirement is waived for the B.Tech. graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B.Tech.  However, such students are not entitled to Institute Assistantship if overall CPI is below 8.0.

 3.  Candidates with AMIE certificates are not eligible to apply.

Ph.D. Programme

The applicant must have a master's degree in engineering with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or CPI of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have a master's degree in engineering are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI.

Candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering with marks/CPI not below 75% marks (or CPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale), or a master’s degree in science or an allied area, satisfying each of the following criteria may be considered for admission into the Ph.D. programme: (a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master’s degree, (b) first division in bachelor’s degree, and (c) JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE. However, a valid GATE score is needed for the candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering, if they have not graduated from a CFTI (centrally funded technical institute).

Further eligibility requirements are given below:

Environmental Engineering  M.Tech./M.E. degree in Civil/Environmental/Mechanical/ Chemical/Metallurgical Engineering or in related engineering branch. Candidates with M.Sc. degree must have mathematics as one of the subjects at the 10+2 level.

Geoinformatics:  M.Tech./M.E. degree in Civil/Mining/Electrical/Computer Science/Electronics Engineering/Information Technology, or M.Tech./M.Sc. degree in Earth Science streams/ Geography/Physics/Mathematics/Environmental Sciences. Candidates with M.Sc. degree must have mathematics as one of the subjects at B.Sc. level.

Geotechnical Engineering:  M.Tech./M.E. degree in Civil Engineering.

Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering M.Tech./M.E. degree in Civil/Aerospace/ Agriculture Engineering.

Structural Engineering:  Candidates with Master’s degree in Architecture, Building Construction and allied subjects may also be considered.

Transportation Engineering:  M.Tech./M.E. degree in Civil Engineering.
