Any computer registered to join the Domain Name System can be treated as a DNS server. Actually, a DNS server contains a database of network names and addresses for other Internet hosts and runs a special-purpose networking software and features a public IP address.

All DNS servers are organized in a hierarchy and communicate with each other using private network protocols. Root servers - are at the top level of the hierarchy, storing the complete database of Internet domain names and their corresponding IP addresses.
