Learning Objectives

  • To familiarize students with Indian classical and semi-classical music, particularly as played on the violin.
  • To make students sensitive to the modes of creative and artistic expression through instrumental music, enabling them to appreciate the world of notes and beats even without lyrics.
  • To inculcate perception and understanding of creative expression within rule- bound, systematically laid out (classical) music: students will be exposed to a way of thinking that is different from thinking styles in science/ engineering fields.
  • To make students appreciate the history of Indian classical music, and how this system judiciously adapted an instrument like the violin (mainly a Western instrument) into indigenous string instruments.
  • To provide opportunities for students to perform before an audience and to appreciate performances by others: such experiences will help in confidence-building, bring out hidden talents, and promote participation in groups.

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge is expected, except an interest in music. After two/three classes student has to arrange violin for him/her. A couple of practice violin instruments may be available.

* Minimum 75% attendance is mandatory.
** Please note that you will have to make your own arrangements for local transport to/fro IIT Kanpur from your respective residences.
