Introduction

Tomography (coming from the Greek (tomos = slice) is the science of quantitatively obtaining ("reconstructing") the internal structure of a medium of interest from the data obtained by interaction of an interrogating signal with the medium. The reconstruction of the object's parameters of interest is carried out computationally upon modeling the data as a linear or nonlinear function of the unknown parameters.

Proposed Coverage

  • Basics of straight‐path CT algorithms; algorithm‐characterization.
  • Image segmentation and registration aspects.
  • Foundations of model based reconstruction algorithms.
  • Photoacoustic tomography, neutron and phase‐contrast imaging.
  • Applications in nuclear medicine, physiological imaging with optical fluorescence based tomography.

Envisaged Outcomes

At the end of the course, it is expected that the candidates will understand how to write and execute basic reconstruction algorithms along with an understanding of the underlying assumptions as well as the corresponding application areas. The attempt is to give an interested candidate a subject‐ view from the basics to the cutting edge, with a hands‐on capability of actually solving simple reconstruction problems.

How to reach

By Road

The campus is located off the Grand Trunk Road, and is easily accessible by road from Delhi, Lucknow, Prayagraj (Allahabad) and Varanasi. The campus is located at about 15 kms from the Kanpur Inter-State bus station.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Kanpur Central Railway Station (CNB) located at a distance of about 15 kms. It is well connected to the Northern, Central and Eastern railway sections. Autos and Taxis plying to and from the campus can be easily found throughout the day.

By Air

Regular flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata operate from the Civil Air Terminal of the Kanpur Airport, Chakeri. The airport is located at about 25 kms from the campus and travel to and from the airport can take between 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the time of the day and traffic conditions. It is strongly recommended to pre-book taxis or use Ola/Uber for the travel to and from the airport. Auto-rickshaws may be available at the airport at select times.

The Lucknow Airport, at Amausi offers wider connectivity and is located around 85 kms from the campus. One-way travel to/from the airport costs approximately Rs. 1200-1600/- depending on the vehicle and the operator.

Operational Information

The hands-on sessions to be conducted as part of the course are computational in nature, and it would be desirable that participants bring their own laptops to facilitate the same. It is recommended that participants install software supporting computational mathematics such as MATLAB/Octave/ Mathematica etc.
