2. What to do if I cannot
get the LAN connection
? -First find out where the problem is, that is whether it is in your room/lab only or the entire block/building. -Then complaint to the network group in CC. (Mail to navi@iitk.ac.in OR call 7371)

3. What is my IP and how to get it ? -If your PC/Laptop is in the Academic Area, then use DHCP. -Otherwise, follow the following steps to find out your IP Address: -Open the web site of CC (http://www.iitk.ac.in/cc). -Click on IP Address -Click on Hostel IP Address or Residence IP Address -Select the Hostel/Block/Room No. or Residence/Type/House No. from the list -Then click on Go to get your IP Address.

4. How to configure
dhcp/static IP in
the computer to the LAN?
A. Configuration Settings for Windows Platform -Go to Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Network Connections >> Local area Connection >> Properties -Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -Click Properties -For DHCP, select Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS address automatically -For static IP, Specify IP, Gateway, Subnet Mask and DNS
B. Configuration Settings for Linux Platform
-Go to Network Settings GUI -Select and configure the Interface -For DHCP, select automatically obtain IP address and automatically obtain DNS address -For static IP, Specify IP, Gateway, Subnet Mask and DNS

6. Where do I get the patch cord and what is the price ? You can buy a 3m patch cord from DOSA office for Rs. 45/-.

7. I find it really frustrating when my network connection breaks at 2:00 AM when I have a deadline the next day. Why isn't someone here to fix it right now? We provide support from 9 am to 5 pm on all working days. In case you have complaints at times other than this time, you can send email to navi@iitk.ac.in and your complain shall be attended the next working day at the earliest.

8. Does CC filter and restrict access to IITK network ? IITK network is an "open" computing environment, reflecting the traditional openness of the academic environment. However, we restrict the access from your machine to the Internet and vice-versa by using Firewalls and also block access to porn sites.

11. I am not
getting authentication page while using Direct Internet Access (No Proxy) ? This may happen because of following two reasons:
1. The Fortigate Firewall for Direct Internet Access allows only 5 simultaneous authentication requests. In case it receives more than 5 requests, it treats the client machine as infected and blocks the authentication for 3 minutes. This process may repeat and you may never get authentication.
To avoid this situation, clean your machine from all virus and worms (infections try to access the Internet in the background and generate authentication requests), remove all the Internet applications from Startup menu and do not start multiple Internet applications simultaneously.
2. 172.31.1.130 is not set as the Primary DNS.
