Updating or Creating Personal Homepage for Students and Academic Staff.

For those who wish to update their HomePage through windows and are doing it for the first time on Windows platform

First of all you will have to request for your homepage directory to be created to Mr. Prajwal Bajpai through email ( prajwalb@iitk.ac.in ).

There are three files available in the following links:

http://www.iitk.ac.in/cc/homepage/putty.zip

Download any of them suitable to your desktop and unzip it to get the exe file if it is zipped.

You shall get any of the three exe files: Putty and SSH Client or WinSCP
SSH Client and WinSCP requires installation whereas Putty and WS_FTP can be directly launched from the .exe files or double clicking the icon.
For WinSCP or SSH WinClient, double click on the .exe installer file and then accept the 'License Agreement' and complete the installation steps by clicking 'Next' and 'Ok'or 'Finish' button wherever applicable retaining the default options.
Then launch the programs by by double clicking on the program's icon from the desktop or clicking on the program button from the windows Start menu and then from All Programs.

After launching the program of your choice, follow the steps as shown below.

When you shall have to upload, download or delete or manage the web contents of your homepage folder by GUI through mouse, use WinSCP and when you wish to edit any content from command line use Putty or SSH Shell Client (white colour) of SSHWinClient.

For editing existing webcontents using Putty:

Kindly login to the machine setting hostname as:
webhome.cc.iitk.ac.in

Click 'Yes' if this screen appears:



Then enter your CC user id and password like this:



You shall be directed to your home folder of the central file server system (vfiler) (shell account) of CC immediately after successful login as shown below:



From there you will have to change directory to this path:
/www/<user-id>/www/

You can use 'cd /www/<user-id>/www' in command line through putty:


You may edit any file using vi or other editor:

For deleting existing webcontents or creating new contents using Putty:

For creating a new file just type vi <filename> like vi pic.html if your wish to create a file called pic.html and press enter. Then press I or Insert key to go into insert mode and type in the contents. Then press Esc key to get out of the insert mode and type :wq to get out of the vi editor after the file is created and content of the file is saved.

The same method may be used to edit (modify the contents) an already existing file.

For creating a new directory type mkdir <directory-name> like mkdir picdir if picdir is the name of the new directory to be created. You may type cd <directory-name> like cd picdir if picdir is the directory to go into that directory.
 

For deleting an already existing file you may type rm <filename> like rm index.html incase you wish to delete index.html file in your folder.

For deleting a directory and its entire contents you may type rm -rf <directory-name> like rm -rf picdir if you wish to delete picdir directory from your folder.

For uploading and downloading and editing (using WinSCP):

For editing old files, download old files to be edited to your local computer and then edit them and then upload back the edited file to the webhome server.

Kindly login to the machine setting hostname as:
webhome.cc.iitk.ac.in and giving your CC user id and password as follows:

Click 'Yes' if this screen appears:

In the left side of WinSCP you shall have the local filesystem and on the right side you will be shown the remote filesystem of webhome.cc.iitk.ac.in. You shall be directed to your home folder of the central file server system (vfiler)(shell account) of CC immediately after successful login as shown below:

You can click on the path of the Right Window of WinSCP in your right hand side window and enter ‘/www/<user-id>/www/’ like ‘/www/saikat/www/’ for the person whose CC user id is ‘saikat’ and then click 'OK'..

Then you shall be shown the content of the www directory within the directory allotted for you where you shall have to upload your webcontents:

You may use your mouse to drag and drop the the files or folders from right to left (download) or from left to right (upload).

To edit any file ,  download the file to your local computer by clicking on the file in the right window and then drag and drop it to left window . Then edit the file using any webpage editor and then again upload it back by drag and drop to right window from left. You may have to confirm the replacement by clicking 'Yes' and then your old file shall be replaced by the newly edited file.

Your homepage shall be visible in the internet in this URL:
http://home.iitk.ac.in/~<user-id> like http://home.iitk.ac.in/~saikat for CC user id ‘saikat’.

For deleting existing data (using WinSCP):

Select the file or Directory to be deleted by clicking it in the right window and then clicking the 'Delete' button below:

 

For Linux Users (from command line)

For uploading : Open a terminal in your local linux machine connected to I I T Kanpur campus LAN. Your local directory should have the webcontents to be uploaded. From there using command line type 'sftp <user-id>@webhome.cc.iitk.ac.in' and then type 'yes' if prompted with some questions and then type in your CC password for authentication. After the authentication type 'cd /www/<user-id>/www/' to go to the root folder of your homepage. Then use 'get' or 'put' statement to download or upload any file.

For editing or deleting : Open a terminal in your local linux machine connected to I I T Kanpur campus LAN. From command line Type 'ssh <user-id>@webhome.cc.iitk.ac.in' and then type 'yes' if prompted with some questions and then type in your CC password. After the authentication type 'cd /www/<user-id>/www/' to go to the root folder of your homepage and then you may use vi editor to edit your webcontent there. Type 'vi <filename>' to edit that file. To delete any file type 'rm -f <file-name>'. To delete any directory type 'rm -rf <directory-name>'.
