Travel and Visa |
It is recommended that all non-Indian
participants read the information about Indian immigration
at Bureau of Immigration, India and take appropriate actions
to comply with the immigration policies/rules. A letter of
invitation may be required to apply for an Indian visa to
attend the conference(s). In such situation, please contact
the chair of the respective conference.
In India, INR is the only legal currency allowed in
financial transactions. So, visitors are advised to carry
sufficient funds in INR for basic expenses and to only
transact with merchants in INR. However, many merchants in
Kanpur do accept major credit cards --- Visa, MasterCard,
and Ames.
INR can be obtained at various foreign exchange vendors both
at New Delhi International Airport (upon arrival). It is advised that any participant
converting foreign currency into INR should retain the
transaction advice for these conversions. Similarly, it is
advised to retain transaction slips for withdrawal of cash
in INR from ATMs. These transaction advices and slips are
required to convert any left-over INR into foreign
currencies before departing from India.

How to reach IIT Kanpur
Kanpur is well connected by rail and road with the major cities in India. Though it has a small airport as well which is connected with metro cities in India but flights are more frequent in Lucknow airport which is two hours journey from IIT Kanpur.
From Kanpur Central Railway Station:
IIT Kanpur is located at a
distance of about 16 kilometers from the Kanpur Central Railway Station. Taxis are available from the Cantt side of the Kanpur Central Railway
Station (from Platform number 1 side). The city taxis may be old-fashioned. There is a pre-paid
auto and taxi booth. The rates are about Rs. 300/- to 400/- for a taxi, and Rs. 150-200/- for an
auto-rickshaw. Sometimes you may be able to negotiate a few rupees less with the driver, if
you don't go to the pre-paid booth. For taxi services you can also call the following taxi agencies
located at IIT Kanpur. Please make sure that you get down only at your destination and NOT at the IIT gate which is about 2 KM away from the place where you would be staying.
From Kanpur Airport:
Kanpur airport is located about 25 km away from the IIT campus. Upon arrival, participants can avail taxi services on the spot or pre-book the taxi from any of the institute approved taxi services given below.
From Lucknow Airport:
Lucknow is the capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. One can avail the taxis at the airport taxi-stand, but they can ask for any arbitrary amount. You can use the taxi service numbers given bellow to book a taxi in advance. Depending on the type of vehicle, these taxis will charge between Rs 1400/- and Rs. 2000/-. (Charge for Air-conditioned taxi is only Rs. 100/- to 200/- extra.)
