Date January 15, 2010
Background With ever increasing load demand and diversity of electrical energy sources, delivery of electrical power is becoming an increasingly complex task for engineers and policy makers alike. The paradigm of centralized generation schemes is gradually poised to change to include increasing levels of distributed generation and storage, a major consequence being interoperability of a hitherto electrical consumption centre as storage or source. This calls for a completely new approach towards electrical power and information processing as well as involving the consumers as crucial stakeholders in the design and operation of the new energy delivery mechanism. These complexities are being recognized internationally, the major Smart Grid initiative of the Department of Energy, USA, being a significant example. In the Indian context, the situation is further complicated by the somewhat limited reach of the utility grid. So, the solution portfolio has to take into consideration the operation of local islanded grids along with the centralized utility network, with provisions for seamless integration as and when economic and social factors are favourable.
The main objective of this workshop is to identify specific areas of research which need immediate focus to handle the challenges of Smart Energy Delivery Systems (SEDS). The concept needs to be evolved organically from within the country, to be relevant to the prevalent market practices and social realities. In this workshop, eminent speakers will be invited to address specific issues on the technological aspects of the system operation, control and intelligent grid concepts, especially with a significant share of distributed generation using renewable sources. The workshop will culminate in a panel discussion to identify the specific research topics, which will help develop the necessary infrastructure and technical knowledge base for the smart delivery mechanism of electrical energy.
