Event Name International Symposium on Photovoltaic Science and Technology (visit website)
Date January 13th, 2010
Background Energy securities with environment protection are twin challenges facing our world today. With increase of population and change in lifestyle, there is a tremendous pressure of energy demand and its generation. Till now major portion of our energy needs have been met by fossil fuels like wood, coal, and petroleum products. Apart from exhaustible, these sources emit large amount of carbon, carbon monoxide, sulfur and other dangerous gases and products. These green house gases lead to global warming and its consequent aftermaths like melting of glaciers and rise of sea levels. The electricity generation with right kind of technologies is desired for ours and planet earth’s survival. Solar photo-voltaic (PV) is one such option. Our institute organized a National Conference on the Emerging Trends in the Photovoltaic Energy Generation and Utilization (NCETPEGU) in March, 2008. The conference was successful at bringing together academicians, scientists and technologists working in universities, research institutes and industries at same platform to share their experiences, knowledge and expertise. It was inaugurated by Mr V Subramanian, then Secretary MNRE. Besides Indian participants, there was large participation of experts in PV from outside India. The indigenous Photovoltaic industries enthusiastically participated and brought their products in an exhibition. Panel discussion on "Strategies for PV in India" brought to attention the importance and action required by Govt and other concerned. Participants were given prizes in Poster Paper presentation and Working Model Contest. Till the time of the NCETPEGU, many faculty members and scientists have been taking keen interest in different aspect of PV technologies. Institute is willing to support the group and a decision has been made to set up a "Solar Energy Research Enclave".
